If you check the box to use your Circle earnings in the app, they are immediately removed from your account, even if the kiosk actually refuses to apply them at checkout. I am surprised they haven't been sued yet over this, and I hope they do.Ģ. They should delete this check box from the app already and always use the earnings first. So, this is very greedy on the part of Target. And possibly, the earnings will expire unused, and Target can write them off. Of course, there is a chance that you might come to the store, and fail to use them, as I did.
What's the possible reason a consumer would not want to use them when checking out, and leave them unused ? No rational reason I can think of for a consumer. They aren't worth more on some days than others. Those earnings expire in 1 year if unused. But is that a reasonable thing to require ? I say no. You need to check "Target circle earnings" in the wallet screen of the app to use your earnings. Can these earnings actually ever be used in store ? Let's count the fails here.ġ. And surprise, the $15 of target earnings are showing again in the app. She gave me a $15 credit, and I paid the 16 cents. The store manager came by to help, and told me she would make it right. Surprise, now the $15 of Target earnings disappeared from the app again, as if they had been spent, even though they weren't accepted by the self-checkout kiosk ! An employee looked at it and told me to "refresh the app" by closing it and reopening it.

When I showed the bar code, the machine accepted it, but it still showed the full $15.16 was due, whereas it should have been $0.16 due. But this time, I also unchecked the option to use the Redcard, so my debit card wouldn't be charged if the earnings didn't get used. I made sure to check the option to use the Target circle earnings. I picked up another 4 pack of Haagen Dasz. So, perhaps there was another chance.Ĭome Friday, I went to a different Target store. However, on Monday, I checked the app again, and they were back. It looked like I might have to call Target on the phone anyway to resolve this. So, I had the ice cream refunded a second time, and left the store empty-handed.Ī few hours later, I checked the app - my $15 of target earnings were gone, even though they had never been spent ! Groans. I had no desire to spend time on the phone trying to fix something that should have worked in store. The ice cream was melting, by then, and so was I. At that point, customer service told me I would have to call someone on the phone to fix the problem with the circle earnings not going through. The receipt still showed $15.16 charged to the debit card. I had them refund the ice cream, then ring them again. They told me there was a checkmark in the app for "circle earnings" I had to enable, which I wasn't aware of. All of it had been charged to the Target debit card, none to the earnings. The 5% discount brought it down to $15.16.

I went through the self checkout and showed my bar code from the app. I picked 4 Haagen Dasz ice cream, for $3.99 each. On 3/13, I went to a Target store near a restaurant I had dinner at, specifically to spend those $15. I did a promotion a few weeks ago that earned me $15 of Target earnings. But I found my experience trying to use Circle Earnings very underwhelming.
